I think we have previously established that I am a list maker. I loooove lists. I color code lists and sometimes add things just to check them off my list. Seriously – I might need list intervention – does that exist?I am the perfect candidate for making New Year resolutions, but I have to be honest here and admit that I go out of my NOT to make them. Not there is anything wrong with making resolutions, per se. I have several friends who think long and hard about what they want to focus on and then they go out and do it. I so admire them – but it’s not me.
I used to make resolutions, back before I was married and a mom. They were usually about losing weight, or joining a book club, or staying on top of my filing, or finding a new job. They were all good goals to have, but not something that I wanted to work on the entire year. Because a resolution, by definition is 1) a firm decision to do, or not do something; 2) the action of solving a problem, dispute or contentious matter. Not exactly what I wanted to spend a year focusing on.
For those who make resolutions – good for you! I mean that from the bottom of my heart – but I know that I can’t be the only person who doesn’t make them. Instead, I make (spoiler alert!) a list of places I want to go, experiences to try, people to visit. Each new year I sit down with my nice new planner and plan out how I can squeeze the most life of each month.
Some months are packed with play dates and coffee dates, field trips and fun. Other months have weeks blocked off for vacations and travel. A few doctor appointments pop up here and there – but my goal is to fill our days with life and laughter. Each day, no matter what is on the planner, this is my goal:
Live. Love. Serve Others. Say Thank You. Smile. Laugh.
It’s what I want my kids to see as they watch me. It’s what I want others to see as they watch my kids. Life is precious and slips through our fingers so quickly – so make every moment a way to connect with others and let them connect with you.
In a way, it’s a pretty good resolution to have!
