With 5 kids we rarely get the chance get out on a date. My mother in law is amazing and is always willing to watch the kids, but as you can imagine there is always something going on, and date night seems to get pushed to the back burner. Can you relate?
Between Ken’s job as a minister and his online teaching, and our homeschool days, field trips and foster care stuff it can be really easy to lose touch as a couple. After a full day of picking up toys, changing diapers, washing dishes and answering the never ending *why* questions by the time the kids are in bed I just want to collapse on the couch and not talk to anyone. That isn’t fair to him, and it’s not the way I want to spend time with my man. If we can’t go out for a date, what to do?
Bring the Date Night Home
There are so many simple ways you can date your spouse at home without leaving the kids and without spending a fortune. You might need to get creative and think outside the box, but that’s where the fun comes in! To get you started, here are some fun date night ideas:
- Pop in a movie, add some snacks and snuggle on the couch
- Have a late dinner after the kids are in bed
- Sit on the porch and watch the sunset together
- Watch you favorite TV program together
- Dance to your wedding song
- Garden together – or in our case I pick the flowers and he plants them
- Play a board game
- Look through family albums/scrapbooks
- Cook dinner together – or better yet dessert!
See what I mean? Remember how it used to be just the two of you before kids? It’s hard for me to remember those times when I’m exhausted from lack of sleep, but those early days of our relationship were super fun – and it wasn’t hard to find time to date.
Favorite Date Night Movies
Some of my favorite times are watching movies with Ken. It’s a low key evening but it’s just what we need. Over the years we have compiled a fun list of titles that we enjoy watching together – and Christmas is no exception! Here’s a few from our list this year:
- The Holiday
- Christmas Vacation
- Love Actually
- While You Were Sleeping
- Muppets Christmas Carol
- Miracle on 34th Street
- A Christmas Carol
- White Christmas
Perfect for a Date Night
If you CAN get out for a date night, I can’t wait to see The Man Who Invented Christmas! The story narrates the magical journey that led to the creation of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), Tiny Tim and other classic characters from A Christmas Carol. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day), the film shows how Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) mixed real life inspirations with his vivid imagination to conjure up unforgettable characters and a timeless tale, forever changing the holiday season into the celebration we know today. The Man Who Invented Christmas opens on November 22nd nationwide. You can catch a sneak peek below:
I’m thrilled to be partnering with Grace Hill Media and offering you a chance to win a prize pack of three of my favorite movies: The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast (the new one!) and A Christmas Carol. You can enter to win using the rafflecopter below. The winner will be chosen on November 22nd.
