I love crafting, but when it comes to drawing or painting I am way out of my league. My girls can paint circles around me and there are times when I wish I could snap my fingers and be able to draw! One of the things I love about Classical Conversations is that fine arts is built into the curriculum, so I feel that they are getting some art education, but as for hands on learning? I really had no clue what to do and I was feeling bad because my sweet girls love to draw and really wanted to learn more technique.
Disclaimer: I was compensated for my time and we received a free trial to use the program in return for an honest review. I was not paid to write a positive review. All thoughts and photos are mine. The End.
I thought about looking for online art classes for them, because with 5 kids it’s a little crazy trying to get everyone out of the house and then keeping the littles occupied while the big girls do their thing. One name that kept popping up was Sparketh and when I was given the opportunity to review them I jumped at the chance.
Sparketh Online Art Lessons for Kids
Sparketh offers Sparketh Online Art Lessons, which are taught by a Sparketh Mentor who is an experienced creative professional that is passionate about art. It sounded almost too good to be true, so I handed my laptop to Sophie and asked her to pick a lesson. I kept as hands off as possible, to see if the Sparketh online art lessons are something that the girls can do alone.
First she scrolled through all the classes that were offered – we were looking at beginner level classes, but there are also intermediate and advanced level classes as well. She chose to the Bumblebee course, taught by Dwayne Walker by clicking on the class icon. The page popped up with a short introduction video by Dwayne, and then the course began. There were 4 lessons in the Bumblebee course, broken into short segments guaranteed to keep your child engaged and not overwhelmed.
She was able to learn how to sketch, outline and add color to her drawing. While Sophie has done a lot a drawing and copying from books she picked up on the shading and outlining tips quickly and has continued to refine those skills in other drawings. Bella decided half way through the lesson that she wanted to draw as well, so I let her sit with Sophie just to see how she would do. I must admit, Bella blew me away. Her drawing of the Bumblebee was fantastic, and since I can’t ever get her to sit still for more than 3 minutes watching her sit through 4 art lessons in a row was amazing!
Why we LOVE Sparketh Online Art Lessons
Sparketh has art courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced. You are able to search for classes based on what areas your student (or you!) want to learn more about – Manga, Fluid painting, Water colors, pencil drawings, etc. Each course has all the lessons recorded so you can watch them back to back, or one at a time. You can find the materials list for each class as well, which is extremely helpful if you want to plan ahead!
There are a few reasons why I think Sparketh is a fantastic resource for homeschool parents, or for students who just love art:
- The price of $25/month or $250/year is very affordable – and much cheaper than paying for private art lessons
- Being able to let the girls logon and have an art lesson when they want? Awesome.
- The videos are well done, easy for my girls (and me) to understand. Plus, if we miss a step we can watch that portion of the lesson over again.
- You can try Sparketh FREE for one month. Honestly!
- Not having taking 5 kids out of the house, or trying to schedule an art lesson around our busy schedule is such a blessing.
- Did I mention the price is fantastic?
After using Sparketh for a few weeks, I really like the program. Even better, my girls LOVE it, which has been great. We will be continuing to use Sparketh after our trial is over, simply because I don’t believe there is another online art lesson program that offers everything Sparketh does at such a reasonable prince! Who knows, perhaps I’ll even finally learn how to draw.
