We travel a lot, both as a family and with just Ken and I. One of our favorite places that just Ken and I visited was Assateague Island to see the wild horses and the marshlands. We are lucky to live within a short (well…..4 hour) drive to Maryland so when we decided to take a spur of the moment trip it was pretty easy to plan.
The reason we are taking a spur of the moment trip is because Sophie is completely horse crazy. I’d say it’s a passing phase, but I really think her love of horses might be here to stay. She’s reading every horse book she can get her hands on, including The Horse Encyclopedia by DK and quite a few vet training books. We haven’t told her yet, but we are looking into securing riding lessons for her starting this summer. <–insert jumping up and down here when she finds out.
It wasn’t a hard sell to convince my husband that we needed to visit Assateague Island once Sophie finished the books Misty and Stormy, Misty’s Foal. If you haven’t heard about Assateague and Chincoteague Islands, they are located on the East Coast in Maryland and Virginia. It is home to around 300 wild horses who roam the beaches and are a sight to see! You can also find more than 320 species of birds in the marshes, and lots of trails to follow and wander. The beaches are sandy and fun for the kids (and adults ) to run on.
I couldn’t pass up a chance to add in some education with our trip, so I created a lapbook for the girls to fill out in advance of our trip! It’s a quick lapbook, using only 1 folder and is meant to be finished in 1 day, or perhaps 2 if you want to stretch it out.
This is a free lapbook download – simply click on the image above and you’ll be taken to the download page! After you complete it, I’d love for you to share it on social media and make sure to tag me so I can share it!
