Two years ago I had the chance to review CTC Math as part of the TOS Review Crew. As a blogger I am privileged to have the opportunity to review many different curriculums to share with you, and sometimes we find a product that really works for our family that we continue to use long after the review period is over. CTC Math is one such curriculum that has continued to work for our family.
What CTC Math Is
CTC Math is an online math program that is for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade, and then goes on with intermediate and advanced math like Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra I and II, Calculus and Trigonometry. While my girls are still in elementary math, admittedly I was pretty excited to see advanced math included so that I wouldn’t have to stress about teaching that. (yes, I like to plan ahead.) I’ve also thought about logging in and taking some of the courses myself just for fun!
How CTC Math Works
Two years ago I tried CTC Math with Sophie, who wasn’t enjoying any math curriculum that I came up with. In fact, I was frustrated trying to find something that would work for her but that wasn’t too much for me to plan. Since CTC Math is online, there is no prep for me. When it’s time for Sophie’s math lesson she logs into CTC Math, enters her student password and she is taken right to her portal where all her lessons are laid out. She chooses what she wants to work on, the video plays while she listens and then she does the math problems that correspond with the lesson. If she doesn’t get something right away, she watches the video again.
After she completes the math problems she is able to print out the results, which is great because I can put it in her file and I know exactly what she is working on. She loves seeing the scores because she can earn reward certificates in Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze at the end of a unit. She’s generally in the Gold category but is determined to move up into Platinum!
CTC Math for Parents
When I log into CTC Math as a parent, I am taken to the parent portal where I can see at a glance what Sophie is working on and how she is doing. I am able to change the grading process (for example if she misses more than 40% of the questions she has to retake the test) which has been fantastic as she is getting older and more secure in her math progress.
I really, really love that I’m not the one teaching her. Sophie and I are both very logical people, with little to no room for grey areas, which at times can be tough if I’m trying to teach her something that she isn’t understanding – but then I have a hard time thinking up another way to teach it. The videos are short, straight forward and easy to listen to. It’s rare that she has to watch one more than once, but I like that we have the option to!
Final Thoughts on CTC Math
If you have more than one child, you can have both kids working in CTC Math but at different levels – and because of the parent portal you can see everything at a glance. So far Bella has been using textbook curriculum, but this summer I’m going to have her start working on CTC Math *just for fun* so she gets used to it.
I need to stress that I am not being compensated for this post at all. We pay for our CTC Math subscription because it works. Many times bloggers (myself included!) review a product and really like it, but then for one reason or another stop using it. I wanted to do an update on my original post simply to say that yes, CTC Math still works for us.
