You might not know it, but I am more comfortable behind a computer screen than in front of a live person. Give me a keyboard and I can type and converse all day, but face to face? That is a bit harder for me. I’m an introvert at heart, and the idea of being in a large group of people at a homeschool convention chattering away is a little (okay a lot!) overwhelming for me. Add in trying to shop for curriculum, listen to speakers and not get lost in the vendor hall and I almost want to run away!
Free Homeschool Convention Planning Packs:
Since I love to make lists, I created some printables to use at our local homeschool convention and I’m sharing them with you! There are 2 sets of printables – one is specific to Classical Conversations Cycle 3, and the other set is generic for all homeschoolers. Please feel free to click on the icons below and download them for free!
Now, if you are heading to convention, there is a lot to see and do! Here are 5 quick tips to help you get the most out of the homeschool convention and get you set for the next school year!
Five Tips to Survive a Homeschool Convention:
#1 – Make a list. Before you ever leave home, make a list of what you want to look for and remember to bring it with you! It’s great to be able to talk to the vendors and see the curriculum or subject before you purchase it!
#2 – Make a budget and stick to it. When you are walking through the vendor hall it’s very easy to get lost in the moment and suddenly your well planned budget is out the window. If you are enthralled by a curriculum that is out of your budget, try to find ways to make it work. Can you buy pieces of the curriculum? Can you check with your homeschool group and see if you can buy/borrow it from them? Now is NOT the time to blow your entire homeschool budget for next year.
#3 – Don’t stay in the vendor hall the entire time. Get out and enjoy some speakers. Have lunch. Breathe. It’s important to step back and evaluate if what you are purchasing is really the best option for your family. Even a 20 minute breather can help!
#4 – Ask questions. Ask lots and lots of questions. The reason you are at the convention is to learn – so ask! Believe me, vendors LOVE to talk about their products!
#5 – Have fun with it. Even if you are an introvert like me, it can be fun to be surrounded by families who have one thing in common – we all homeschool! Who knows – you may meet a new friend, or find a new co-op or find a fantastic resource that will encourage you in your homeschool journey!
