We are a single income family by choice, and we strive to make good financial choices to keep our budget on track. While some of our line items are a necessity (like food, insurance, etc) we were finding it harder and harder to justify our ever rising cable bill. When we signed up for cable we did the *bundle deal* which allowed us to have our phone, internet and cable bundled together for a lower price. It seemed good at the time, but then we noticed that every 6-8 months our bill would increase slightly and soon we were over $125 a month!
At the same time, I noticed that our kids were starting to become very aware of commercials and suddenly we were asked for every new toy that was hitting the market! We also noticed that some of the commercials were not appropriate for our kids to see (even on *family* geared channels) and decided that enough was enough. Admittedly, I was ready to be done with cable months before Ken was – but finally he had enough too.
Of course, being a homeschool family I wanted the kids to have documentaries available, and selfishly I wanted to be able to watch some of my favorite TV shows as well. We looked at several options and kept coming back to NetFlix. Our subscription is $8.99 a month which allows us to have 2 devices streaming at the same time. It costs us $108.00 a year instead of $1500.00+, which is a huge savings!
I love a lot of things about Netflix – we can stream on our TV, our laptop, netbook, Kindle Fires and even on my smart phone! Both girls can watch on their Kindles during quiet time, or I can be watching Hawaii Five-0 while Ken catches up on Planet Earth. The best thing about Netflix? No commercials -and during this election season I am SO thankful for that!
There are a ton of great shows to pick from on Netflix, including documentaries which makes my husband every happy; and my many of my kids’ favorite shows as well. Here’s just a few that we love to stream:
My Kids’ Top NetFlix Picks:
*Jake and the Neverland Pirates
*Sofia the First
*Veggie Tales in the House
*Star Wars the Clone Wars
*Magic School Bus
*Clifford and Friends
*Sid the Science Kid
My Top Netflix Picks:
*Once Upon a Time
*About a Boy
My Husband’s Top Netflix Picks:
*Parks and Recreation
*The Black List
*The West Wing
Of course, not all of our favorite shows are available on Netflix – I keep waiting for NCIS LA to make the cut, but it hasn’t happened yet! My husband had to tough it out during baseball season by listening to the games instead of watching them, but the savings each month made it easier. I’m missing having football on in the background in fall, but we have been able to watch some of the games online, or it’s a great excuse to pop over to my mother in law’s house for a visit!
Have you cut the cable cord? I’d love to hear your thoughts!!
