One of the reasons I was not overly excited about adding American Girl Dolls into our home is because of the hair! If you have either an American Girl Doll, or any doll with hair that knots as soon as you breathe on it, this is for you!
Yes, you absolutely CAN untangle and smooth knotted and tangled doll hair, and itCAN be a simple process. All you need is the following:
First, fill the spray bottle with half warm water and half liquid fabric softener and shake it to mix well.
Lay a towel on a firm surface (I use our kitchen counter) and lay the doll on the towel with the hair spread out.
If you can, separate the hair into sections and spray liberally with the mixture. Really soak the hair.
When the hair is soaked, take the brush and start at the ENDS of the hair and gently brush the hair against the towel surface.
- Always start at the END and work up as you go. If you start at the top you will just keep snarling the hair towards the ends.
- Use small strokes and small sections at a time
- You will pull some hair out, so brush gently.
Once the doll’s hair is smooth, stand the doll up and brush the hair from the top down gently. When you have the hair untangled use a toothbrush to smooth any flyaway strands.
Now you (or your daughter) can style the doll’s hair! If the doll has coarse hair, then a braided style will work best. If the doll has fine hair, try leaving it lose to dry and then styling as usual.
I’ve used this method on our American Girl dolls, our Disney Animator Princess Dolls and Barbie doll hair – and it works every time!
For extremely tangled hair you may need to repeat the process, but keep at it and it WILL work!
