Hello! I am currently working on making this shirt for my daughter for my husbands welcome home ceremony from deployment. I was just curious, how did you make your bow?? and what size ribbion did you use?

    • Hi Katie :)

I used 1 inch grosgrain ribbon which holds it’s shape better than a satin ribbon.

I made a regular bow with long edges, and then I added 2 extra edges to the bow so it would look a bit fuller.

I hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by – and thank you so much for all that your husband and you do to help keep our country safe!

  2. This is a great idea for us sewing-newbies!

  3. Hi! This is a great idea! And I have lots of old rick rack from my past sewing days. But I am curious; how do you launder the shirt once it’s done? I have visions of the white tee turning pink!!

    • Hi Myra!

I’ve washed it with my regular detergent and it’s still white with no pink tinging. You call also wash the shirt in non-chlorine bleach, which will get the shirt white but leave the color alone. Let me know what you think!

  4. I love these and want to make them for my grandchildren for the 4th of July!!! How do you keep the edges from fraying, especially when you wash them???

    • Hi Tina!

You can use fray check on the ribbon/rick rack if you wish, or you can burn the edges of the ribbon and rick rack. Personally I didn’t use it and after many washes the edges are still okay!

So cute! It would even work on a wooden plaque to make a simple wallhanging. Thanks for posting.

  6. I am making these cute shirts for my great nieces! Can you share how you made the hair bows, as their Mama loves to put bows in their hair. Thanks very much :)

    • Hi Sandy!

I used some left over ribbon, rick rack and some white flowers that I had lying around. I used the fusable tape to held the ribbons to the flower and then I hot glued the flower onto a hair clip. Super easy and so cute :) I’ve love to see pictures of yours!!

  7. Just wondering how you keep the ends of the rucksack from fraying. And does the fusible tape show under the rock rack?

    • LOL – I *love* auto correct :)

You can use fray check to stop the edges from fraying, or you can *burn* the edges with a lighter to fuse them. I personally left the edges alone and they haven’t frayed more at all.

Cut thin strips of the fusible tape to fit behind the rick rack and you can’t see it at all. If you have a little edge of the tape showing it won’t be that noticeable on a white shirt at all.

  8. Darn you autocorrect!!! Rick rack!,
