Here on the east coast it has been hot and humid the last few weeks. So hot, in fact that there isn’t much we can do outside. Our play equipment is hot to the touch {no shade in our yard!} and the girls don’t even want to fill the pool.
We’ve made trips to the library, an indoor play place, Sesame Place {a few times} the mall….but it gets to the point where I want to be home….but what to do when it’s SO hot?!
Here are some of the fun ways we’ve been wild and crazy inside during the heat:
Please note that I’m a pretty relaxed mom, and that some of these are messy!!
10. Bubble Party ~ Super easy! You need a fun CD and bubbles. Momma blows bubbles and the kids dance, run, and scream. It’s truly amazing how easy this one is, and how much my girls ask over and over for a bubble party. {If you are worried about your carpet/hardwood floors lay down a sheet or two.} Note: if you have a bubble machine, or a hand held bubble blower this will be much easier for you!
9. Balloon Toss ~ We always have left over latex balloons laying around from birthday parties. I filled a bunch with air, made a line on the carpet with masking tape, and had Sophie and Bella kick or toss the balloons over the line. Since balloons go everywhere it was a fun to do, and got some energy out!
8. Rice Sand ~ My girls love sand, but it’s too hot to play outside! I found a long bin in the tool room, dumped in 2 bags of white rice and added some sand toys toys. This was a huge hit – and not too messy! Note: you can lay out a flat sheet under the bin/table to help with clean up!
7. Tent City ~ the girls were each gifted with a pop-up tent this Christmas, but this can also be done with lots of sheets, blankets, and pillows. Pretty much anything can make a tent or fort and kids love crawling and hiding! Move the furniture, tip over a table ~ you’ll be amazed what you can create!
6. Cereal Necklaces ~ Sophie and Bella love this! I took some all cotton yarn and some cheerios or froot loops and we started stringing. So easy and they love the snack necklace!
5. Snow Day ~ When it’s this hot, why not make some snow?! It’s simple….put ice cubes in a blender and viola! You have ice snow! There are 2 ways to do this, it depends on your messiness level! You can lay a flat sheet or shower liner on the floor under your table and put the snow right on the table, or you can bring it up and put it in your bathtub. Bring out the bath toys to scoop, add in some food coloring for color, make snowballs….it’s really fun! Note: You can also make sno cones….YUM!
4. Pajama Day ~ Sophie loves this! She and Bella get to stay in jammies all day. We have breakfast foods for breakfast and lunch. We read lots and lots of books, snuggle with friends, and watch a special video. Just a different day to break up the routine.
3. Finger Painting ~ instead of regular finger paints, how about painting with whipped cream or shaving cream? Different textures, lots more fun, and if you opt for the whipped cream, clean up is pretty easy
You can cover your table with kraft paper and let them go nuts! We use the counter in the kitchen for easy cleanup.
2. Pool Party ~ I crank up the music, put swimsuits on the girls and we have a “pool party”. We start with a picnic lunch on the floor, lots of fun music to dance to, and then we “swim” in the bathtub. Easy, so simple, and the girls love it!
1. Craft Time ~ I stock up at Michaels, AC Moore and the Dollar Store on inexpensive crafty items. When we need an activity, I pull out the bin and let the girls dig through it! It’s easy and fun for them, which makes it fun for me!
We are having a BLAST. For the first time in weeks I’m looking forward to the day ahead, knowing that I have a fun surprise to whip out. It has been a great break in routine, and it’s helped on those days when everyone is whiny!
