I love flowers – but I am not a great gardener. Being married to a man who can grow pretty much anything means that I am immersed in gardening magazines, seeds and fertilizer pretty much from January to September.
Last year I decided that I wanted to plant my own garden, and my awesome hubby said ok! We went to the garden shop, and after asking a zillion questions and going back and forth we finally came home with a car full of plants and mulch.
So, if you are looking for plants that are easy to care for and have pretty flowers here are my top ten perennial picks:
10. Bee Balm {spreads fast, put it where you can control it}
9. Black Eyed Susan {love these! Pretty and bright}
8. Obedient Plants {spreads amazingly fast. Pretty flowers}
7. Cone Flowers {all colors – purple are my favorite}
6. Day Lilies {easy to plant; spreads easily; lots of color}
5. Hosta {these are not my favorite, they are very easy}
4. Dianthus {my hubby loves these!}
3. Aster {pretty colors and very hardy}
2. Phlox {easy to grow, variety of bright colors}
1. Clematis {climbing vine, big flowers}
For annual plants I really like geraniums, petunias, and vinca.
I’ve learned that the more I deadhead the flowers, the faster the blooms grow back, which means healthier and fuller plants. Mulch will help keep the ground moist and you won’t need to water every day. {which is good, since I generally forget to water!}
It is important to make sure the plants you choose are correct for your zone. You can check your zone here.
