My Top Ten Blogging Tips

I’ve been blogging for 2 years. It’s been a fun ride and I’ve learned some good lessons along the way.  Here are my Top Ten most important lessons that I’ve learned so far……

10. Know why you are blogging. When you started your blog, you had a reason for it – what was it? Is it still the same? Blogging takes time and energy, so it will be helpful to check in from time to time to make sure you still know why you blog.

9.   Design is important. Check out some blogs that you like and take notes on what you like/don’t like. Remember that your blog design is the first thing people see – even before they read your content.

8.   Comment. Comment. Comment. I can’t say that enough. Blogging is about community and commenting on other blogs is a wonderful way to do that. Yes, it takes time, but it is well worth it!

7.   Build relationships. I use Disqus so I can reply to every comment that is made on my blog. You can find me on twitter Monday through Friday – tweet me to say hi! Seriously….I {heart} twitter!

6.   Encourage other bloggers. Blogging should not be a competition! You can do this through commenting on posts and sharing posts on twitter or facebook. Let’s build each other up!

5.   Guest post. A wonderful way to build up your following is to write a guest post or become a contributing writer to a group blog. I’m fortunate to belong to some amazing blogs: Growing Your Homeschool; Must Love God; and{most recently} 3in30.

4.   Understand social media and use it. There are so many ways to promote your blog: twitter, facebook, pinterest, stumble upon, google +….the list goes on. Pick one or two and start from there.

3.   Set up a blogging schedule. I highly recommend this.  I started using a schedule in January, and it has changed the way that I blog! You can see mine here.

2.  Have a mission statement. I wrote mine a few months after I started blogging and I refer back to it every few months to make sure I’m still on track.

1.  Write what you know. I write about my girls, our faith, homeschooling and our foster journey. When you write what you know, you write well – and good content is {for me} THE most important thing.
